While the other guy is still fiddling with the shutter speed dial atop his MX, or pressing the manual up/down buttons on his ME Super, I've already got the shot in the bag.Įxposure compensation is easily employed by just lifting and turning the ASA dial (you don't actually have to lift the rewind crank as per the instruction book) so creativity is really not hampered in any way. You don't even have to switch it on, just whip the lens cap off, wind on and shoot (I always leave the lens set at f5.6, easy then to quickly adjust a stop or two in either direction). What it does do, however, (assuming you've managed to find a copy in good working order that hasn't been left to rot in the loft or garage) is it allows you to capture great shots with the minimum of fuss and forethought. It doesn't pretend to be a professional's main kit camera, so shouldn't be measured by the same yardstick. I can't help feeling there's a degree of snobbery directed towards the lesser mortals in the Pentax range, particularly the MV-1 and MV. Lack of features, but you knew that before you bought it, didn't you? All you need is a light meter app on your phone and you're good. I believe it works on 1/100sec without batteries, which is pretty good to know. Then you probably wouldn't need the compensation memo wheel. Or close it until it goes orange and flick back to green for 1/60 sec.Ĭompensation has to be done via ASA setting, which is fine unless you forget what film is in there! If I could add one more feature it would be a holder window for the end of the film box a la MX etc. If you're worried about fastest shutter speed then open the lens until the meter shows red then flick it back one click and that's 1/1000sec. And so really the limitations of the MV simply aren't limitations for me. I admit I nearly always use aperture priority mode, even on a £4,000 digital SLR. It's got an excellent meter, takes K-mount lenses and 35mm film - what more really do you need? ![]() ![]() But this camera is about ease of use and the lack of features is very much an attractive part of its character. Smaller than anything other than ME / ME Super and lighter than any of them. It was introduced the same year as the ME Super, four years after the ME. The Pentax MV was a less expensive version of the Pentax ME with no optional winder, a smaller view finder without shutter speed information, and a few other cost cutting changes.
